A new survey shows that businesses are seeing corporate social responsibility as an increasingly important issue.  However, the survey reveals that many companies are not gathering and using information effectively in the areas of operations, supply chain and customers when attempting to undertake CSR initiatives.

A surge in interest with regards to the environment by many corporations, has seen the creation of many new career and business opportunities particularly in the field of corporate social responsibility jobs.

“New careers emerge from going green” found on Canada.com, talks about the increasing need to monitor, measure and report on environmental factors as having led to new roles in the discipline of accounting.

The article also discusses the advantages a company undertaking corporate social responsibility initiatives can have in terms of attracting staff to the organization:

A new report available from International Marketing Reports LTD, argues that companies might consider supporting sports in their local community as an alternative or perhaps parallel to more commonly thought of areas of the environment or even arts.

The report contains detailed case studies and analysis of how some blue-chip companies including Nike have created a successful connection with sports as part of their global corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

As with any CSR undertaking, it is important for the corporations to ensure that their involvement in the local community aligns with the targets for improving the society within which they operate.  For example, association with sporting activities that encourage troubled/homeless individuals engage, may be an appropriate avenue to pursue as part of the corporations overall CSR strategy.

The EPA’S annual Toxics Release Inventory (TRI)report lists the toxics released by every U.S. company that employs 10 or more people. A study shows, says Heal, that upon the release of this report, companies with a bad TRI rating find that their share price falls. Thus pollution is a real cost to companies.

A UK based survey on corporate social responsibility jobs salaries has been recently released.

The survey incorporates the responses of 354 people that work in corporate social responsibility jobs throughout a broad range of industry sectors.

Amoung the many interesting conclusions that can be drawn from the survey, it appears that many people that responded still feel a sense of job security despite the recent global financial crisis.

The Times West Virginian has published an article around the Corporate Citizenship Project run by West Virginia University.

The course allows students to gain an insight into corporate social responsibility by participating the the granting of money to non-profit organizations.

Some students are have even changed their career’s to work in nonprofits due to the exposure and experience gained from undertaking the course.

“Their eyes are opened to the nonprofit. Many of them have never done community service before, so they learn the need to give back, whether it be personal time or monetary. They get a sense of the vastness of the need out there.”

Many companies provide money and volunteers on the annual Corporate Social Responsibility Day in Malta every March 19th.

Employees from several organizations use the day to go out and help community organizations, by lending a hand with renovations, and maintenance work.

“Our staff’s eagerness to commit their time in an effort to give these the chance of a better quality of life is a sign of our willingness to make a difference which goes beyond the financial part of the equation.” says the CSR Day Organising Committee.

An article on the Ethical Corporation website explores the recent events at Satyam in the context of Satyam once being admired as a leader in Corporate Social Responsibility.

Considering the nature of Satyam’s downfall, how could they have been considered a beacon for corporate responsibility?  Of course the answer lies in what you define corporate socialresponsibility to mean.

“Such a narrow definition of corporate responsibility as charity is common among Indian companies. When talking about responsible business, most exclude key issues such as transparency, ethics, governance, anti-corruption and accountability to stakeholders.
