The BSR/Cone 2008 Corporate Responsibility in a New World Survey of 424 corporate responsibility professionals, representing 28 countries, was conducted on 5 November 2008.
The survey contains some very interesting up-to-day insight into current CSR thinking.
Some examples are:
- The majority of respondents believe the election of Barack Obama will have a positive influence on progressing the corporate social responsibility agenda.
- An even bigger majority believe the incoming administration will bring with it increased government regulation with regards to CSR.
With the incoming administration’s focus on the environment and more socially biased influences, it would be a safe bet that both of the above points most likely be the case.
- Two-thirds believe the president elect can help CSR by promoting renewable energy & the development of carbon capture and storage capabilities.
- Over three-quarters of respondents believe China will have the most influence on the evolution of corporate social responsibility over the next 5 years.
This should not be surprising when you factor in the rise in consumerism in China. China are continuing to expand the country’s electricity production capacity at huge rates to meet the growing demands of the modernizing population. So if China can set a winning agenda with regards to the area of sustainable energy production alone, it will have a huge impact globally. Better still if Barack can set the tone in the US (as mentioned in the belief of respondents above), it could have influence globally.
- The survey also predicts rising demand on companies to solve social problems.
